A Slovak town will be one of the European Capitals of Culture in the year 2026, with its twin city appointed in Finland. Culture Minister Lubica Lassakova and Vice Premier Richard Rasi have recently addressed Slovak municipalities requesting them to enter the call for registering candidates which opened in December. "At the end of this year, the selected towns should be announced," said the Culture Minister, adding that the name of the Slovak Capital of Culture would thus be known by the end of 2021. The Vice Premier pointed out that bearing the title European Capital of Culture means receiving financial support for culture and cultural infrastructure which the town would otherwise lack. "It also secures the continuous development of the town and the region," stressed Rasi. The first ever Slovak town to win the title was Kosice, in eastern Slovakia, back in 2013. The initiative known as the European Capitals of Culture was set up in 1985 with the aim of fostering the contribution of culture to the development of cities, among other goals.
