100 years of Pittsburgh agreement

The agreement between representatives of Czech and Slovak expat associations in the USA, initiated and signed by Tomáš Garrigue Masaryk, the then head of the Czechoslovak National Council, was signed in Pittsburgh on 31st May 1918. It is considered to be a key step towards the declaration of the joint state of the Czechs and Slovaks, independent of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy, in October 1918. Why was it important to win the support of expats in the USA?
