According to data from the Interior Ministry, in October last year there were a total of 58,210 non-governmental organisations officially registered as such in Slovakia. This figure includes a wide variety of such bodies from civic associations to foundations set up by companies and hospitals run by not for profit organisations. A group of analysts under the umbrella of the Public Affairs Institute a think-tank based in Bratislava decided to take a look at the activity of all these non-governmental organisations. The study sponsored by the German organisation Konrad Adenauer Stiftung was publicly presented last week. Anca Dragu asked one of the authors, the sociologist Zora Butorová how the public perceives non-governmental organisations in Slovakia.
