NGOs financed from abroad not required to register

NGOs active in Slovakia that are directly or indirectly financed from abroad won't be required to register in the newly-created Foreign Clients Register. Parliament on Thursday struck down an amendment to the Act on Non-Profit Organisations Providing Public Services drafted by far-right People's Party Our Slovakia. Marian Kotleba's party intended through this amendment to make more transparent the structure and activities of NGOs that are linked to finances from abroad and that carry out propaganda and political agitation activities on Slovakia's soil. "A great number of NGOs, their members and employees accept subsidies from foreign sponsors and attempt to influence public opinion in Slovakia. The aim of these NGOs is to shape public and political opinion in Slovakia in such a way so as to align it with the schemes of foreign sponsors," claimed the submitters. According to the party, anyone who promotes the ideologies and interests of foreign sponsors on the soil of a sovereign state falls into the category of "foreign agent".
