Alexander Van der Bellen is new Austrian President

Independent candidate and former chair of the Green party Alexander Van der Bellen will be the new President of Austria after Sunday's election. His opponent Norbert Hofer from the far right Freedom Party of Austria admitted the defeat even before the official results were announced. According to figures published on Monday morning, Van der Bellen beat Hofer by 7.2%. The election was repeated as the Constitutional court cancelled the original vote which took place in May, due to the violation of rules while counting votes which arrived by post. At that time, Van der Bellen also won, however, his victory was not as significant then. Slovak President Andrej Kiska commented on the result on his social media profile: "I congratulated Alexander Van der Bellen with joy in May this year already. I am very happy that my congratulation remains valid. I cross my fingers for our neighbours and I am looking forward to meet the new Austrian President soon," wrote Kiska.
