Slovakia and Czech Republic cooperate in airspace protection

Slovakia and the Czech Republic will cooperate more closely in the protection of the countries' combined airspace, following the signing of an international treaty which was approved by the Slovak government on Wednesday (7/12). Both countries protect their airspaces under the guise of NATO through an integrated system of anti-aircraft and missile defence (NATINAMDS). Under the proposed contract, in the case of a temporary loss of capacity to respond to threats, the neighbouring country will step up and enter the incapacitated country's airspace. Otherwise, Slovakia and the Czech Republic will continue to ensure the protection of their airspaces separately. Czech forces use Swedish Gripen fighters while Slovaks use Russian Mig-29s. Any possible intervention in the countries' common airspace will be decided via the laws of the state in which an event occurs.
