During Tuesday's debate in Brussels among NATO Foreign Ministers, Slovakia submitted an agreed initiative for closer defence cooperation within the European Union. This reaffirms commitments made at the NATO Warsaw summit in July this year, as was stated by European and Foreign Affairs Minister Miroslav Lajčák. He noted that the debate highlighted differences of opinion regarding the role of the Alliance, with some allies placing emphasis on combatting immigration and others in the fight against terrorism. "This is why Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg commissioned the task of developing a political and military assessment of the proposal and the possibilities of what the Alliance should do. That should narrow down debate on specific priorities," added Lajčák.
