Law on least developed districts to be expanded

The law on support for the least developed districts will probably be expanded to include additional districts, Prime Minister Robert Fico has told Parliament. "This mechanism has proven to be extraordinarily effective," Fico said. The law currently applies to 12 districts and provides for several measures. If interest is shown by foreign investors in local projects, the government offers them localities where they can enjoy even more benefits than in the rest of the country, Fico explained. "I'm glad that big investments have started to appear outside western Slovakia," he added, referring to the fact that the country's eastern regions are regarded as less developed, and thus less attractive to investors.

Everyone who wants to work can currently find a job in Slovakia, Fico claimed, while admitting that salary levels might discourage citizens from seeking a job in some cases. "We're now addressing the issue of how to support further salary growth," he said.

Fico announced that regional development will be shifted from the Transport, Construction and Regional Development Ministry to the government office as of January 2017.
