Slovakia not to adopt Optional Protocol to Convention against Torture

The Slovak Interior Ministry announced that Slovakia will not adopt the Optional Protocol to the Convention against Torture, reported public broadcaster RTVS on Monday. The reason for not adopting the document, which requires the formation of an independent body to control all prisons and re-education centres for youth, is that the structure of controlling bodies in Slovakia is sufficient. It includes the Protector of Human Rights, the Prosecutor's Office, the European Committee as well as UN Committee against torture, explained the Ministry.
