On Sunday, Slovaks remembered the 200th anniversary of the birth of the Lutheran priest, politician, journalist, writer, literary critic and the first speaker of the Slovak Parliament Jozef Miloslav Hurban. A commemorative celebration took place in his native village of Beckov, in the Nové Mesto nad Váhom district of western Slovakia. "He was very prudent, as well as courageous; so much so that his life was often in danger," said Miloš Klátik, General Bishop of the Lutheran Church in Slovakia at the ceremony. "It is very important not only to preach God's word and live a spiritual life. We should also spread these ideas throughout our society; in our family first, followed by the church and the whole nation," said Klátik, reminding people of Hurban's legacy.
