Europe must seek ways to use cleaner transport

European countries are transitioning, step by step, to cleaner vehicles, said European Commission Vice-president for Energy Union Maroš Šefčovič at an HNClub discussion forum on Tuesday. Having said that, what still needs to be done first is to set the stage for and facilitate access to cleaner cars for consumers, stated Šefčovič. "We need to find a way to enable the broader use of infrastructure for electric or hydrogen-fuelled or other alternative fuel cars, such as those using compressed natural gas or liquefied natural gas, both in Slovakia and elsewhere in Europe," he added. Mayor of Bratislava Ivo Nesrovnal floated the idea of restricting diesel-powered cars in Slovak city centres, though he admits that this comes with caveats. "We'd prefer not to start by introducing bans ... that would be no good. Rather, we're looking to propose a mobility system in the city, involving a parking scheme, road sharing, support for public transport, rail and alternative transport, bike sharing, walking ... All this must be ready before a discussion on regulating diesel engines is in order," said Nesrovnal. Šefčovič said that, as part of its Energy Union initiatives, the European Commission is planning to promote an extensive package of policies for low-carbon clean mobility later this year.
