Slovak soldiers might use new armoured personnel carriers (APCs) as early as next year, as the Defence Ministry is planning to purchase 81 8x8-wheeled APCs and 404 4x4-wheeled APCs and multi-purpose tactical vehicles, according to a ministry document that has already gone through the inter-ministerial phase. The purchase of the military equipment should cost almost €1.2 billion in total, including costs of logistical support, ammunition and infrastructure. According to the ministry, the Slovak army doesn't have these types of vehicles at its disposal even though they are considered to be an important part of the operational groups and self-operating units of all NATO member states. The current Slovak military machines are at the end of their operating lives. The Defence Ministry assumes that the funding of the projects as well as the procurement procedure will be approved by the Cabinet as early as this year. Moreover, the process of evaluating bids and inking contracts with the winner of the tender are also set to take place this year. Serial production of the vehicles and their delivery is scheduled from 2018 to 2029. The first ten 8x8-wheeled APCs and seven 4x4 APCs should be handed over to the Slovak army in 2018.
