Drugs for heart diseases and nervous system top the list of prescribed medicines

Last year 83.2 million packages of prescription medicines, fully or partially covered by health insurance, were sold in Slovakia, according to the National Centre for Healthcare Information. Health insurance companies paid a total of €911.9 million for drugs, which represents an increase of 4.2 percent compared to 2015. Patients' co-payments also increased by 3.1 percent to € 141.1 million. Drugs for cardiovascular diseases and those of the nervous system were the most prescribed medicines in Slovakia last year. Slovaks paid a total of €170.2 million for over-the-counter drugs with those for the respiratory and digestive systems topping the list when it comes to number of packages sold.
