Slovak soldiers will serve in the Baltic region next year as part of NATO's Enhanced Forward Presence. Slovak soldiers should mainly be dispatched to Latvia again and will serve in a multinational battalion battle group led by Canada. The estimated costs reach some €7.7 million. Slovakia has already been operating in the Baltic region as part of a joint Visegrad Four/V4 (the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, Slovakia) training mission. A total of 149 Slovak soldiers will be stationed in Latvia until June. Regarding the Enhanced Forward Presence mission, the Defence Ministry wants to send a mechanised division to the region for a period of one year. This means up to 152 members of the Slovak Armed Forces. At the 2016 Warsaw summit, NATO member states agreed to deploy four multinational battalion battle groups to the four NATO members (Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and Poland) viewed as being most at risk of possible Russian aggression.
