President Andrej Kiska vetoed and returned to Parliament an amendment to the law which would allow one-off emergency measures in highway construction projects. However, MPs continued the session later on Thursday night and overran the veto shortly after midnight. Eighty-one lawmakers voted for the draft bill again, while 45 MPs were against. The amendment stems from last week, when Transport Minister Arpad Érsek conceded that problems have emerged with the buying of plots of land for the future Bratislava bypass, stating that speculators strategically bought land before construction began in order to make the largest profits out of the sales. The amended legislation would enable some construction to begin on the land before the time-consuming expropriation process is concluded. The opposition, however, advises that the Constitutional Court will have the final word on this law amendment.
