Population at risk of poverty decreased to 18.1% last year

The proportion of the population deemed to be at risk of poverty and socially excluded dropped to 18.1 percent last year, down from the 18.4 percent a year before, according to a partial report on the social situation in Slovakia presented to the Government on Monday. It means about 947,000 Slovaks have been in this situation, the group being dominated by incomplete families and those with more than three children. "The fall in the poverty rate between2013-2015 was caused primarily by a levelling of income inequality in households falling the within low-income band. The annual drop in the risk of poverty was more notable for men than for women," reads the report. A total of 7.4 percent of people, more women than men, were found to be at persistent risk of poverty in 2015.
