Widow of pilot killed in aircraft crash returns his awards

The widow of the pilot of the AN-24 military aircraft that crashed near the Hungarian village of Hejce in January 2006 has returned all the awards bestowed on her husband in memoriam at the President's Office on Monday over her frustration with the fact that the authorities haven't resumed the investigation into the crash. The widow refused to speak to members of the media, but a sister of one of the deceased crew members confirmed to press agency TASR that the woman was met by Chief of the President's Military Office Vladimír Šimko. According to her account, the Office hasn't officially accepted the returned awards. The family members of the victims have filed two motions with the Prosecutor-General's Office, asking for the investigation into the cause of the crash to be resumed. They've cast doubt over the results of the Slovak Armed Forces' investigation committee, which 11 years ago pinned the blame on human error. The bereaved believe that the real cause of the crash was probably a technical malfunction. A total of 41 soldiers and a civilian employee of the Defence Ministry perished in the crash, which left only a single survivor.
