Opposition calls for snap election; Prime Minister resists

Prime Minister Robert Fico, speaking at the Foreign and European Affairs Ministry on Tuesday, rejected "attempts to destabilise this country", brushing off opinions that a snap general election should resolve the current coalition crisis and claiming that this would thwart Slovakia's hope of being at the core of EU integration. The prime minister criticised what he described as a huge amount of false information which has emerged recently in order to destabilise the country. "Gentlemen from the Opposition should say what they actually want - whether they want to pursue their ridiculous partisan ambitions, or whether they want to talk about this country. Everyone has the right to criticise and engage in opposition politics, but national interests come above everything else," said Fico. "I've been prime minister of this country for a tenth year now, and I realise that every prime minister has their lifespan ... I'm not suggesting that I'd terminate my mission tomorrow; I have some time ahead that I want to use mainly to see this country working in economic and social terms and with its public finances in order," said Fico.
