Prime Minister asks Education Minister to stand down

Peter Plavčan has been relieved of his post as Minister of Education, with Prime Minister Robert Fico (Smer-SD) announcing today that he will ask Slovak National Party head Andrej Danko to appoint a new Education Minister. Fico thanked Plavčan for trying to explain the ongoing case involving the suspicious distribution of Eurofonds, but his suspicions remained. Education Minister Plavčan has faced criticism since the beginning of July for the special allocation of Eurofunds for research and innovation. Funding was destined to be received by businesses which had never performed research, instead of state-run universities and research institutions.
