Warmer temperatures to increase avalanche risk

A moderate level of avalanche danger will persist for a few days in the High Tatra and West Tatra mountains, sitting at Level 2 within the five-digit international scale. During the most recent period of snowfall, 30 centimetres of new snow was recorded, which has offered only mild security to existing snow and ice collections at higher altitudes. Anton Sedlák of the Mountain Rescue Service (HZS) Avalanche Prevention Centre states that this, combined with incoming warmer weather, increases the risk of avalanche on steep slopes higher than 1500 meters above sea level. Sedlák added that most snow in the High Tatras and the Western Tatras is dusty and unevenly distributed.
