25 years since the election of the first Slovak President

15th February marks the 25 years since the first President of the independent Slovak Republic was elected by the Parliament. The then Movement for a Democratic Slovakia MP Michal Kováč was approved by 106 out of 148 votes. His mission started on 2nd March 1993 and ended on 2nd March 1998. His presidency has been known for the tensions with the then Prime Minister Vladimír Mečiar. President Kováč criticised Mečiar in his annual report on the state of the society in 1994. This resulted in the fall of his government as well as in the abduction of the President's son to Austria. Michal Kováč, the first Slovak President, died in 2016 at the age of 86.
