While the Western Balkan states want to hear more about their chances of joining the European Union, EU leaders who gathered at the summit in Sofia on Thursday spent time discussing how to protect the EU's interests, after US president Donald Trump scrapped a nuclear deal with Iran. It implies sanctions against European companies doing business there and Brussels wants to use existing regulation that prevents companies from recognising certain non-EU jurisdiction decisions. Slovak diplomacy considers the US's decision to withdraw from the deal a "regrettable step" and calls on the remaining countries involved in the agreement to continue respecting it.
