The list of candidates for the 2019 Slovak presidential election will probably be the longest in history. After the ethnic Hungarian and chair of the coalition Most-Híd party, Béla Bugár, announced that he would run for president on Saturday, the number of candidates is currently thirteen and there are probably more to be announced. However, so far, not all candidates have met the criteria of collecting either 15,000 signatures from citizens or 15 signatures from MPs. Commenting Bugár's candidacy, analyst Juraj Marušiak said that "it seems that his bid in the 2019 presidential elections is rather motivated by advertising his party prior to the 2020 general election. If Most-Hid didn't place its own candidate and supported a figure from a different party instead, this would likely result in a gradual decline in the public perception of the party ahead of the 2020 general election," stressed the analyst. In May, the incumbent president Andrej Kiska announced that he will not run the post again.
