The European Commission has earmarked €4.8 billion from the next seven-year EU budget (2021-27), with funds designed to decommission nuclear facilities in some EU-member states, including Slovakia. The European Commission Vice-president for Energy Union Maroš Šefcovič said that this was the last major package of financial regulations in the area of security. He praised the result: "I'm pleased that we've managed to persuade our colleagues that the costs associated with decommissioning Jaslovské Bohunice are still extremely high. We are under time pressure as the date for decommissioning is 2025. We've agreed that some €55 million has been earmarked for this programme in Slovakia."
