Progressive Slovakia party to join European liberals

The Slovak non-parliamentary party Progressive Slovakia will join the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe group (ALDE) at its November congress. As the SITA press agency wrote, the face of the ALDE is the former Belgian Prime Minister Guy Verhofstadt. "In times of populism and doubt in the fundamental elements of democracy, it is important to have a clear force based on values to defend it. This is especially important for Slovakia, where many parties are abandoning European values and chosing to respond to radical moods in society," said party's vice-chair Michal Šimečka. Progressive Slovakia will be the only Slovak party in the alliance. In the past, Richard Sulík, the chair of another Slovak party, the Freedom and Solidarity party, was a member, however, he later left and joined the conservatives and reformists.
