Ľubomír Feldek receives award for bringing Shakespeare to Slovaks

The British Embassy will mark the 25th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the United Kingdom and Slovakia by presenting the Slovak poet, prose writer, dramatist and translator ĽubomírFeldek with the Ambassador's Award on Thursday. "Mr. Feldek has merit in bringing the best of our classic literature to people. His translations of Shakespeare contribute towards enriching the repertoires of Slovak theatres and entertain all generations of Slovaks", said the British Ambassador Andrew Garth. Feldek has translated 16 of Shakespeare's plays into Slovak. The Embassy also gave awards to two other Slovaks who "are exemplary examples of the strong ties between the two nations" to date. The first was researcher Monika Gullerová, who has been carrying out research at Oxford University into using DNA in cancer treatment. The second was Ivan Schwarz, who received the award posthumously. He served in the Royal Air Force during WWII and was one of the most successful Czechoslovak pilots.
