Slovak Prime Minister comments on EU summit

The planned extraordinary EU summit on Brexit, originally slated for November, will not take place until there is a signal from the chief EU negotiator for Brexit, Michel Barnier, that progress in the talks with Great Britain has been achieved, Prime Minister Peter Pellegrini told journalists after the EU summit in Brussels on Thursday. According to Pellegrini, Wednesday's (October 17) discussion and speech by British Prime Minister Theresa May on the state of negotiations from Britain's point of view brought no new insights. "We've learned nothing new from her," he said. At a dinner on Wednesday, the EU leaders came to a few conclusions. They voiced full support for Barnier and declared that "no progress has been made, with talks once again stuck on the issue of the Irish border". Pellegrini pointed to areas where a mutually satisfying agreement has already been reached, however. "We resolved the future standing of citizens from EU member states in Great Britain and agreed on the financial settlement. Hence, we still think that a solution to the Irish border might be reached," he stressed.
