100 year anniversary of end of First World War commemorated

The 100th anniversary of the end of the First World War (1914-1918) and International Day of War Veterans, both occurring on November 11, are being commemorated in Slovakia through various nationwide events, large and small. Friday morning (09-11) saw a ceremony take place at the Memorial to Members of the Western Resistance at Šafárikovo Square in Bratislava, while Sunday will see a commemorative event take place at 10:00 at the military cemetery in Petržalka, and another at 14:30 at the military cemetery in Trenčín-Kubrá. On November 11, 1918, an armistice was signed which ended fighting between the Allies and Germany. The armistice brought an end to fighting, however it wasn't until June 28, 1919 when the war was officially declared as being over, as the Treaty of Versailles took six months to be prepared. The total number of military and civilian deaths caused by the First World War is estimated to be approximately 16 million, with around 37 million people injured.
