Vallo wins in Bratislava, Polaček in Košice

Matúš Vallo is the new Mayor of Bratislava according to the unofficial results of Saturday's local elections. Vallo, supported by opposition parties Progresivne Slovensko and Spolu, won 36.5 percent of the votes defending the incumbent Ivo Nesrovnal who came third. Košice, Slovakia's second largest city, has a new mayor too after Jaroslav Polaček, supported by a coalition of opposition parties and movements (including the liberals, Christian Democrats and an ethnic Hungarian party) defeated incumbent Martin Petruško, the candidate of the ruling coalition's Smer and Slovak National Party. Nitra joins the list of big cities with a new mayor this time with independent candidate Marek Hattas, who defeated the incumbent Jozef Dvonč from the Smer party. The same is true for Žilina where the top job goes to Peter Fiabáne, an independent supported by opposition parties. Incumbents will keep their post in in Banská Bystrica, Trenčin, Prešov and Trnava. The overall turnout in Slovakia has been 48.6 percent.
