Czech PM to remain on StB Agent List

Czech Prime Minister Andrej Babiš will remain on the register of agents of the former communist secret police (StB) as his complaint against Slovakia filed with the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) was rejected, according to the Czech weekly Respekt. When he entered top politics in the Czech Republic, Babiš tried to have his name removed from the Communist secret police database through the Slovak courts. He was born and spent part of his adult life in Slovakia. Fragments of 12 StB volumes that include records of an agent called 'Bures' were found and released by Slovakia's Nation's Memory Institute (UPN). They referred to Babiš as a collaborator with the Communist secret police under the same code name. He won the first instance proceedings, as the court took into account the testimony of former StB officers, who claimed either that Babiš was not an agent or that they did not remember anything. The Slovak Constitutional Court ruled that the testimony of the former StB members could not be considered credible in court. Babiš then failed in his appeal at the Slovak Supreme Court and immediately complained to the ECHR.
