FinMin: Slovakia did better than expected financially in 2018

Slovakia managed its financial resources in 2018 better than expected. According to Finance Minister Peter Kažimír, the state budget deficit reached 1.182 billion euros at the end of the year, while the projected deficit for the full year of 2018 was 1.973 billion euros. As Kažimír announced at a news conference on Wednesday, the better than expected results were due to revenues being 600 million euros higher than planned, as well as spending being 200 million euros lower than planned. Regarding revenues, Kažimír stated that income tax revenues from the self-employed, withholding tax on dividends and excise duty on mineral oils fell last year. "We also spent less money on managing the state debt," added Kažimír. "The current government does not think about the future, it neglects education, health care, the judiciary, and family policy, as well as the business environment," said the MP for the opposition OĽaNO movement Eduard Heger, in commenting on the results of last year's state budget. He added that the government is not socially oriented, as it keeps raising taxes.
