Journalist internships at EP to be named after Jan Kuciak

The European Parliament confirmed its decision that a programme of internships for investigative journalists at the legislative assembly will bear the name of murdered Slovak journalist Ján Kuciak, said Slovak MEP Ivan Štefanec (Christian Democrats). The idea of naming this programme after Kuciak emerged last year shortly after the journalist and his fiancée Martina Kušnírová were murdered, according to Štefanec, who is also head of the Slovak delegation to the European People's Party. Štefanec stressed that quality journalism is one of the cornerstones of a functioning democracy, adding that Kuciak was a journalist who carried out his work with passion and courage, and that during his short but promising career he managed to investigate cases involving suspect financing and tax evasion. Recently, a centre for investigative journalism bearing the name of Ján Kuciak opened in Bratislava. You will hear more about it later in todays show.
