Fifteen Slovaks join the Righteous Among the Nations list

The Israeli state awards Righteous Among the Nations were handed out to fifteen Slovaks who helped fellow Jewish citizens during the Holocaust. The award ceremony took place in the Slovak Parliament on Wednesday. The names of the 15 Slovaks who received an award will be added to the list and engraved on the Wall of Honour in the Garden of the Righteous at Yad Vashem in Jerusalem. There are already more than 580 bold men and women from Slovakia and more than 27,000 individuals from different countries on this list. One of the awardees was Ondrej Čanecký, who in 1944 saved Walter Rosenberg and Alfred Wetzler who had fled from Auschwitz. By saving their lives, he allowed them to provide the first testimony of what was actually going on in the extermination camp.
