It has been 10 years since February 11 was marked as European 112 Day to raise awareness of the emergency number 112. The number was introduced in 1991 with the aim of easing up access to help for both citizens and tourists in the EU. Since 1998, all EU member states are obliged to provide free calls to this number. As of 2003, telecommunications companies must provide localisation of the person calling the number. As well as in EU countries, 112 can also be called in Serbia, Switzerland or Turkey.
