Disagreements within Smer-SD over its post-election position

On Sunday, Finance Minister and deputy chair of the largest governing Smer-SD party Peter Kažimír voiced disagreement with his party's official interpretation of the outcome of the presidential election that the party had come out strengthened from it. "How could the strongest political party in the country be made stronger by an election process in which it couldn't even fully endorse its own candidate in order not to damage his chances? The only one who has been strengthened is Maroš Šefčovič," said Kažimír who is set to leave the party and take the post of Governor of the National Bank of Slovakia.

According to him, Smer-SD needs to concede that it lost the race - with honour, but a defeat remains a defeat. The only way to reverse Smer-SD's declining popularity lies in the courage to state the truth and utilise all political means available to bring about honest change, thinks Kažimír.

On Saturday, Slovaks chose its fifth president, lawyer Zuzana Čaputová. She is the first female president in Slovakia, the fifth in the EU and 12th in the world.
