Annual report on Slovakia’s EU membership presented

The European Parliament elections later this month and Brexit, planned for the autumn, will be key issues of Slovakia's engagement in the EU this year, according to an annual report on Slovakia's EU membership presented by Foreign and European Affairs Minister Miroslav Lajcak (a Smer-SD nominee) in Parliament on Tuesday. As part of Slovakia's activities in the European Commission, initiatives concerning a new multi-year financial framework and plans to finish the energy union feature high on the agenda. When it comes to Slovakia's priorities in foreign policy in more general terms, the country advocates multilateralism, the unity of the EU and trans-Atlantic bonds. Meanwhile, Slovakia is interested in acquiring the headquarters of the European Labour Agency (ELA). On Monday, the EU Council published a list of EU member countries which are officially applying for the future seat of the European Labour Authority.
The cities that have officially offered their candidacy are Bratislava, Nicosia (Cyprus), Riga (Latvia) and Sofia (Bulgaria). The next stage will be to evaluate the quality of all four offers. Ministers at the EU Employment, Social Policy, Health and Consumer Affairs Council will decide on the winner on June 13 this year. Since this is a new EU agency, a chance should be given to those member countries that do not host any EU institution, including Bulgaria, Cyprus, Croatia, Romania and Slovakia. The main mission of the ELA should be to improve the implementation of EU law on cross-border labour mobility and co-ordination of social welfare.
