New Hungarian party forms in Slovakia

On Saturday a new party representing the Hungarian minority in Slovakia, called the Magyar Forum-Hungarian Forum party held its founding congress. The independent MP and former Agriculture Minister Zsolt Simon become the party's chairman and Zsolt Gál and Alžbeta Janitsová were introduced as vice-chairs of this third Hungarian party in Slovakia. "The Hungarian Forum party doesn't want to split up but wants to bring together Hungarian voters and Hungarian-feeling voters. We want a better Slovakia, and we know that Slovakia won't be a better country and won't have a better government without Hungarians and the Hungarian minority," said Simon, adding that they refuse to co-operate with Smer-SD, Slovak National Party (SNS) and the far-right LSNS.

"We see a need for the preamble to maybe change from a long-term perspective from the current wording "we, the Slovak nation" to "we, Slovak citizens" so that every citizen, also based on the Constitution, feels a state-forming part of this country, so that we are fully-fledged citizens," said Simon.

According to him, from the long-term point of view they also want to promote a change in the territorial division of the country so that it does not disadvantage the Hungarian minority. They also propose a re-evaluation of the education system with the Hungarian language.
