One of the largest employers in Slovakia U.S. Steel Košice announced that its employees would work a reduced, four-day week in July again, confirmed the company's spokesperson Ján Bača, adding that the company management had agreed on this with the trade union. U.S. Steel employees worked only four days per week in May, when they received 70% of their pay for the days on which they stayed at home. The company observed normal hours in June. In July, workers will receive 60% of their pay on days on which they stay at home. The reason for the shortened working week is the unfavorable and still worsening situation on the steel market. Further developments will depend on how quickly the European Commission will be able to react vis-a-vis large steel imports from countries that do not have to follow EU rules and are not part of the European emissions trading system. "We'll resolutely push for this demand at the annual general meeting of Eurofer, due to be held next Wednesday (June 26)," said Bača.
