Slovak MEPs call for democratic elections for the European Commission

In a joint call addressed to the Slovak government on Monday, Slovak Members of the European Parliament from all standard political parties ask the government to respect democratic rules when choosing the President of the future European Commission. Nine out of thirteen Slovak MEPs are calling for the will of citizens expressed in the May European elections to be the foremost factor taken into account. The MEPs think that ignoring the results of the EP elections could help to deepen public distrust in democratic mechanisms and the European project. In their joint call, they also acknowledge that the European Parliament has the mandate to confirm the final composition of the European Commission.
