Speaker of Parliament defends Russia in Strasbourg

Democracy in modern Europe still has various forms, Slovak Parliamentary Chief Andrej Danko (Slovak National Party/SNS) stated on Thursday at the European Summit of Presidents of Parliament in Strasbourg, adding that every effort should put people, their rights and freedoms first. In his speech Danko noted that the current models of democracy, however, prioritise only rights, forgetting that the public also has its own obligations. "Any unifying, artificial rules that restrict the natural development of individual national communities mean an increase in extremism and misunderstanding," stated Danko. He appreciated that the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe in June had decided by one vote on Russia's return to the body. The Russian delegation was stripped of its voting rights in 2014 due to the annexation of Crimea.
