Back in 1971, Milan Straka, a former dancer with the folk group Šarišan, from the eastern Slovak village of Veľký Šariš, founded a folk group of the same name but in a new place: Detroit, Michigan. A majority of the dancers in the Detroit Šarišan were born in the USA, yet they still love and enjoy traditional Slovak folklore.

In january 2020, Šarišan USA also took part in the popular TV show Zem Spieva, broadcasted by Radio and Television Slovakia.
