It was on January 27, 1945 that Soviet soldiers liberated the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration and extermination camp, where the Nazis murdered about 1 million Jews. This date is now marked as the International Holocaust Remembrance Day. Historians from the Holocaust Documentation Centres agree that the present society needs to be reminded more of the Holocaust and its victims. But how to do it in a culturally sensitive way?
When focusing on individual stories connected with the Holocaust in Slovakia, we have to mention the name Gisi Fleischmann. You can learn more about her life and work at the newly opened virtual museum www.gisifleischmann.eu, with personal stories, photos, and documents, all of them already available in English.
