550 refugees to receive university scholarship in Slovakia

"Slovakia will provide scholarships to 550 refugee students by 2021," said Slovak Foreign Minister Miroslav Lajčák on Wednesday at the 71st UN General Assembly regarding migration in New York. He added that Slovakia has also agreed to fund over €7 million during the same period to international humanitarian organisations in order to help in fighting the migration crisis. Collectively, all participants of the Assembly have decided to increase their financial support to the UN and humanitarian organisations by more than €4 billion compared to 2015. The countries have also agreed to employ one million refugees and provide education to another one million people.

According to Lajčák, Slovakia will offer scholarships to young people who were forced to leave their homes. Most of them will have come from Syria. Slovakia will only choose those candidates who will prove to be capable of succeeding in studying at universities. As the Foreign Minister said, the goal of the support is to provide education to people who will then return to their countries. "We think it's not only an investment in these particular people but also in the future of the countries which are being torn by war today," explained Lajčák. The Foreign Minister emphasized that all countries have offered their help voluntarily and have chosen the way to support migrants which suits them the best. "It is very important for us to demonstrate that we don't stand aside. No one can say that Slovakia acts as if migration does not concern us," concluded Lajčák.
