The film “Masaryk” earns 12 Czech Lion awards

The Czech-Slovak film "Masaryk" about the former Czechoslovak foreign minister earned 12 Czech lion awards from the Czech film and TV academy, becoming the most successful film in the 24-year old history of the awards. It collected wins even in the most significant categories: best picture, best director, best screenplay, best male actor both in leading and supporting role categories. Slovak costume designer Katarína Štrbová Bieliková and cameraman Martin Štrba were also among the winners. The Slovak producer of the film, Rudolf Biermann, said in his speech that the motion picture portrays a joint part of Czech-Slovak history which he hopes will never happen again.

Ján Masaryk, portrayed in the film, was the son of the first Czechoslovak president Tomáš Garrigue Masaryk. He was Czechoslovakia's Ambassador to the United Kingdom for 13 years until 1938, when the country was split and some areas were occupied by Nazi Germany. In 1940, he became Foreign Minister of the Czechoslovak exile government and remained in the function even after WWII until 1948 when he was found dead. According to the first investigation he committed suicide; the second one 20 years later concluded that it was an accident, not ruling out a murder. According to the third investigation in the 1990s after the Velvet Revolution, Ján Masaryk was murdered.
