Far right party might be dissolved

Prosecutor-General Jaromir Ciznar on Wednesday, May 24, filed a motion with the Supreme Court to dissolve Marian Kotleba's far-right People's Party Our Slovakia, the spokesperson for the Prosecutor-General's Office Andrea Predajňová informed on Thursday. The Supreme Court disbanded Kotleba's previous political party Slovenská Pospolitosť (Slovak Togetherness) in 2006. "An evaluation of a large amount of evidence has shown that the political party Kotleba-People's Party Our Slovakia, an extremist political party with fascist tendencies, is violating the Slovak Constitution, laws and international treaties with its programme and activities. According to the opinion of the Prosecutor-General's Office, the aim of this political party is to eliminate the current democratic system in the Slovak Republic," stated Predajňová.

The Prosecutor-General's Office has concluded an investigation into over 170 registered motions with a request to file a proposal to the Supreme Court to dissolve the party concerned. Prime Minister Robert Fico on May 9 called on law enforcement authorities to take action to this effect. "Because if we view this as something normal, and we take it as part of freedom of opinion or freedom of expression, we'll be very, very wrong. This has nothing to do with democracy or values, and the sooner we stop these manifestations, the better for this country," said Fico, referring to demonstrations of extremism on the part of the party in question.

The far-right Kotleba-People's Party Our Slovakia on Thursday declined to comment at the moment on Prosecutor-General Jaromir Čižnár's motion with the Supreme Court aimed at dissolving the party, adding that it wants to familiarise itself with the dossier first. "We won't comment on Prosecutor-General Čižnár's motion yet," said LSNS MP Milan Uhrík. "As a political party, we'll strive to defend our existence, of course," said Uhrík, adding that he would not speculate on the party's further moves if it was dissolved by the Supreme Court. "But we won't give up political engagement so easily," added Uhrík.

If the Supreme Court dissolves the far-right Kotleba-People's Party Our Slovakia, this will not prevent its members from further political engagement, and the party's MPs will not lose their seats either, analyst Eduard Chmelár told TABLET.TV on Thursday. Conversely, if Prosecutor-General Jaromir Čižnár motion fails at the Supreme Court, it may boost LSNS's position, believes Chmelár. "I hope that it isn't a mere political manoeuvre but is properly substantiated in legal terms. If so, the situation with the dissolution of [Marian Kotleba's former grouping] Slovak Togetherness will be repeated, but hardly anything will change in fact, as Kotleba's people will immediately set up another party," said Chmelár. Another analyst Juraj Hrabko on TABLET.TV approved of Čižnár motion. "I deem it a piece of good news, as there has already been quite a lot of suspicions of unconstitutional elements with LSNS," said Hrabko.
