Mountain cottages proving popular again

The level of interest from Slovaks seeking to purchase their own cottages in the countryside is growing, reports the Hospodárske Noviny daily on Wednesday. According to the real estate website nehnuteľnosti.sk, a new wave of eager cabin-seekers is on the rise, quietly snapping up small plots of land in towns and villages, in particular in the areas surrounding the Tatra Mountains.

Mountainside apartments and country cottages used for holidays or recreation are becoming a re-branded segment in Slovakia, as they were a popular way of spending free time during socialism. "The interest in holiday real estate is not as high as it was in those times, but the demand does still exist," explains Jozef Futrikanič, Finance Director for the bank ČSOB.

According to the aforementioned website, this type of real estate, branded by realtors as a second home, attracts the most interest in the High and Low Tatras and the areas around their ski parks. This is also where the most expensive apartments and cottages are located, with developers seeking such sites on behalf of their clients.

"Interest in our properties has increased, so we have expanded our offering of apartment types," says Zuzana Fabianová, spokesperson for Tatry Mountain Resorts, which own apartments and chalets in Jasná. Increased interest has also been recorded by real estate agencies in the areas of Orava, Kysuce and Záhorí. The typical buyers of holiday homes in Slovakia tend to be young families with children who have chosen to buy country cottages or apartments instead of buying larger homes in the city suburbs.
