Cyber-security: Slovaks both skilful yet ignorant

Slovakia has good cyber-defence shields, as attested to by its second place win in the international cyber-exercise CyberEx 2017 attended by 65 groups from across the world, stated National Agency for Network and Electronic Services (NASES) spokesperson Lucia Maková on Wednesday. At the CyberEx exercise, Slovakia was represented by a five-member team comprising experts from the National Security Bureau, NASES and anti-virus software producer Eset. "The results of the exercise have demonstrated that key state organisations involved in cyber-security, cooperate well with the private sector, showing top skills in global terms," said NASES general director Norbert Molnár.

While Slovak specialists excel in the cyber-security exercises, most Slovak companies are no match for modern cyber-attacks. Companies tend to use only standard IT security prevention systems, such as antiviruses and firewalls. However, fewer companies have more sophisticated security tools against modern threats, such as ransom or attacks causing site and service failures. The general underestimation of sophisticated security solutions is also reflected in the undersized investment plans of companies for the coming years. This situation may however change by the recently prepared law on cyber-security.
