Slovakia not to face sanctions for its stance on migrants

Slovakia is not facing sanctions in connection with its unconsenting stance vis-a-vis migrants stated the European Commission vice-president Maroš Šefčovič on TA3's programme 'V politike' (In Politics) on Sunday. As he said, no proceedings against the country concerning the violation of an EU contract had been initiated in this regard. However, such proceedings have been launched against the remaining Visegrad four countries (the Czech Republic, Hungary and Poland) but Šefčovič believes that a compromise will be eventually found in this issue. Šefčovič further stated that he appreciates the fact that Slovakia respects the European Court of Justice's decision on rejecting Slovakia's and Hungary's legal action against the temporary quota mechanism for the mandatory redistribution of migrants. The EC vice-president also added that he has welcomed Slovakia's proactive and constructive proposal in the form of material, technical and personnel help to migrants. Šefčovič also added that the EU is gradually managing to slow down the migration flow to Europe.

Regarding the results of the recent general elections in Germany and Angela Merkel's victory, Šefčovič said that the elections should be viewed in a broader context, as Germany as well as the whole of Europe has been going through turbulent times recently. "The most important message for Slovakia is that the pro-European forces have won." He also commented the fact that the Germany's far-right AfD party made it into parliament. "The rise of extremist forces is a warning signal for us. The best answer to these tendencies is to respond with specific measures, specific policies, developing European integration further and at the same time we should communicate with people better and explain to them clearly what would have been impossible without the EU," he said.
