Simplified employment rules for foreigners from third countries

The Slovak Government approved an amendment making it easier to hire workers from non-EU countries in Slovakia on Wednesday. It should come into force in May 2018. It concerns professions where Slovakia lacks a qualified workforce in districts with the average unemployment rate lower than 5%. "We are talking about locksmiths, lathe and milling machine operators or metal working machine tool operators in the automotive and mechanical engineering sectors ," said the Minister of Labour Ján Richter. He adds that the final list could be ready in one month, after the Parliament passes the amendment. Then it should be available on the website of the Office of Labour, Social Affairs and Family. The number of employees coming from non EU countries should meet the maximum of 30% of all the employees of one employer. With this restriction, the coalition MPs want to avoid wage dumping and declining employment conditions in Slovakia.

Foreigners from third countries should also not be obliged to have a temporary residence in Slovakia during the first year after entering our territory if another member state has already granted them residence. Another group of people affected by new legislation are students who have finished their study and researchers after they finish their research. They will be allowed to stay in Slovakia for a further 9 months with the aim of finding a job or starting their own business here. In the case of researchers, the amendment will also apply to their family members.
