Slovak-German business and energy cooperation

"Slovakia values Germany's attitude and activities for maintaining gas transit to Europe through Ukraine," said Economy Minister Peter Žiga in Berlin during the negotiations with his German partner Peter Almaier. The main topic of the meeting was energy, mutual economic relations and the eventual introduction of US tariffs. The Slovak Minister has invited his German partner to the autumn meeting of the Visegrad Four (Slovakia, the Czech Republic, Hungary and Poland) economy ministers.

"With regard to the issue of energy security in the Central European region, the highest priority for Slovakia remains the preservation of the Ukrainian transport corridor in an economically reasonable amount," stressed Žiga. In this regard, Slovakia supports the negotiations on the future of gas transit via Ukraine with the participation of representatives of the European Commission, Russia, Ukraine and Germany. The German Minister Peter Almaier appreciated Slovakia's role in supplying Ukraine with gas in a reversed manner. Slovakia, as the presiding country of the Visegrad Four, is preparing a meeting of the V4 Economy Ministers in autumn. The meeting should also address the announced possible introduction of tariffs on imports of cars from the EU to the USA. Both for Germany and Slovakia, the automotive industry is a strategic area of the economy. Minister Žiga also invited his German colleague to the negotiations in Bratislava. He considers "any decision to accept tariffs as a bad report for world trade. The introduction of tariffs in Slovakia is directly affecting German Volkswagen, with Germany literally on the same boat on this issue." On the subject of possible counter-measures, coordinated action by the European Commission and EU member states is important for Slovakia. At the same time, both ministers appreciated the high degree of mutual economic relations and good cooperation. Economic relations between Slovakia and Germany are at a high bilateral level. Since 1998, Germany has been Slovakia's most important trading partner in the export as well as import of goods and services and key investors in our country. There are approximately 500 German companies in Slovakia employing around 100,000 people.
